Supreme Court to Hold Special Sunday Hearing on Plea Over Delhi Metro Shutdown During Jantar Mantar Protest

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The Supreme Court will convene a special hearing on Sunday, October 11, to consider a contempt petition alleging that its October 9 order concerning restrictions on public transport ahead of protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar was deliberately disobeyed.

A bench comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana is scheduled to hear the matter at 10:30 am.

The petition alleges that authorities failed to comply with the court’s directions against a complete shutdown of public transport in the run-up to the protest. It specifically seeks contempt proceedings against the Union Home Secretary, Delhi Police Commissioner and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Chairperson.

According to the plea, the gates of 45 metro stations remained closed despite the Supreme Court’s October 9 order. The petitioner has alleged that the continued closures amounted to wilful disobedience of the court’s directions.

The Sunday hearing will allow the bench to examine the allegations and consider the claims raised in the contempt petition. The accusations against the officials remain allegations at this stage and are yet to be adjudicated by the court.

The case centres on the implementation of the Supreme Court’s earlier order and the restrictions imposed on public transport in connection with the planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
