EDMONTON (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta is set to receive a major boost to its defence infrastructure as the federal government commits approximately $8 billion to projects across the province, strengthening the role of Alberta-based military facilities in Canada’s national security plans.

Premier Danielle Smith and Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Minister Joseph Schow welcomed the investment, saying the funding will modernize military infrastructure while creating new economic opportunities across the province.

One of the largest components is an estimated $550 million investment that will establish Alberta as the Western Main Operating Base for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CC-330 Husky fleet. The move is expected to further position the province as an important centre for Canada’s defence operations.

Smith said the investment recognizes the contribution of Canadian Armed Forces personnel stationed throughout Alberta and praised military members for their service and sacrifices.

The federal funding builds on Alberta’s existing defence infrastructure, including Canadian Forces bases in Cold Lake, Edmonton, Suffield and Wainwright. The province says the upgrades will provide the facilities required for military training, domestic operations and responses to changing security requirements.

Defence spending expected to create jobs

Beyond military readiness, Alberta officials are highlighting the economic impact of the federal spending.

Schow said the investment could generate up to 38,000 jobs in Alberta, creating opportunities for businesses involved in construction, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, technology, logistics and defence-related research.

The province believes its existing industrial capacity and skilled workforce put it in a strong position to participate in the expansion of Canada’s domestic defence industry.

Smith also pointed to the need for broader community infrastructure around military installations. Alberta is continuing investments in areas including schools, health-care facilities and highways, along with efforts to strengthen the skilled workforce needed by communities surrounding military bases.

According to the provincial government, modern defence facilities can deliver benefits beyond national security by attracting private investment and supporting companies involved in major infrastructure and defence projects.

Schow said the spending will reinforce Alberta’s long-standing contribution to Canada’s sovereignty and provide the Canadian Armed Forces with greater capacity to operate and train.

The province is now positioning itself to play an expanded role in Canada’s defence strategy, with government officials emphasizing that Alberta has the personnel, industrial expertise and infrastructure needed to support the country’s evolving national security requirements.
