Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Albertans who have yet to apply for the province’s $100 Alberta Energy Rebate will have additional time to submit their applications after the government extended the deadline by one month.
The new deadline is October 31, giving eligible residents an additional 31 days to apply for the one-time payment.
The rebate program, launched on July 1, is intended to provide financial relief as households face higher everyday expenses. Eligible Albertans can receive $100 each, while qualifying two-adult households may receive $200.
Additional payments may also be available for eligible adult family members aged 18 or older living in the same household.
More than 1.45 million applications processed
According to Alberta’s government, more than 1.45 million Albertans have already applied for and received the rebate.
Treasury Board President and Finance Minister Jason Nixon said the extension was introduced to give more residents an opportunity to access the payment.
“By extending the deadline, we are giving more families the time they need to apply and receive real relief,” Nixon said.
The program is funded through increased provincial revenues linked to higher oil prices, with the government describing the payment as flexible assistance that households can use according to their individual needs.
New option added for applicants
The province has also expanded the ways residents can verify their eligibility through the online application portal.
Applicants can continue to use online banking or document verification. A third option has now been added, allowing eligible residents to use their 2025 Notice of Assessment to complete the verification process.
The government said the additional option is intended to make applications easier for people who have not yet received their payment.
Fuel tax relief resumes
The rebate extension comes as Alberta’s fuel tax relief program resumes on October 1.
Under the program, the province will suspend its 13-cent-per-litre provincial fuel tax for the remainder of the year. The government said the measure is intended to provide additional relief to motorists amid continued uncertainty in global energy markets.
The province has presented both measures as part of its broader efforts to reduce household costs and return more money to Albertans.
Eligible residents who have not yet applied for the Alberta Energy Rebate now have until October 31 to submit their applications.
