NEW DELHI (Rajeev Sharma): After hours of intense diplomatic negotiations, BRICS member countries have succeeded in resolving their differences and reached agreement on a Joint Statement, clearing the way for its issuance on Friday.
The negotiations stretched deep into the night, with discussions continuing until nearly 4 AM as member states worked through disagreements over a number of politically sensitive issues.
The agreement is being seen as an important diplomatic outcome for the grouping, particularly at a time when geopolitical divisions remain pronounced across several regions.
India Steps Up Consensus-Building Efforts
India played a central role in the final round of consultations, engaging with different member states in an effort to reconcile competing positions and prevent disagreements from holding up the statement.
The negotiations required considerable diplomatic balancing, with countries bringing substantially different perspectives to the table. India’s sustained consultations helped create sufficient common ground for the members to move towards a consensus.
West Asia Made Talks More Complex
The diplomatic challenge was particularly significant because BRICS brings together countries that do not always share the same strategic outlook. Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are all members of the grouping, despite their differing interests and positions on several regional and geopolitical questions.
The situation in West Asia added another layer of complexity to the negotiations. With conflicts and tensions continuing in the region, reaching language acceptable to all sides required prolonged discussions and careful diplomatic engagement.
Despite these differences, the member states managed to keep the negotiations on track and arrive at a common position.
The Joint Statement is scheduled to be issued today, marking the conclusion of an intensive negotiating process and underscoring the group’s ability to find areas of agreement despite significant differences among its members.
