Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s police oversight agency is investigating the death of a 57-year-old man who was shot by Edmonton Police Service officers during a confrontation at a west Edmonton hotel last month.
The incident happened on August 24, 2026, at the Hilton Garden Inn, where police were called at about 7:30 p.m. following reports of a man with a weapon.
According to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), hotel employees and bystanders reported that the man was behaving erratically on the second floor. When officers arrived, they encountered him in a hallway holding scissors.
Police spent roughly 30 minutes attempting to persuade the man to surrender. During the standoff, hotel guests were directed to remain sheltered inside the building. Officers repeatedly instructed the man to put down the scissors, but he did not comply.
Police subsequently deployed a conducted energy weapon and less-lethal rounds in an effort to bring the situation under control. Those measures did not result in a surrender.
The man eventually put the scissors down, but the confrontation continued. ASIRT said he later picked up the scissors again and moved toward officers while negotiations were still underway.
Shortly after 8 p.m., two police officers discharged their firearms, striking the man.
Officers immediately began providing first aid before emergency medical crews arrived. Despite those efforts, the man died at the scene.
ASIRT has taken over the investigation, which will examine the circumstances surrounding the use of force and the shooting. The agency stressed that the information released so far reflects what investigators know at this early stage and what can be disclosed without compromising the ongoing probe.

ASIRT operates under the Police Review Commission as an independent, civilian-led body. Its mandate includes investigating potential criminal offences involving police officers in Alberta, particularly incidents in which police actions may have resulted in serious injury or death.
