CHESTERMERE (Rajeev Sharma): The Chestermere Punjabi Bazurg (Seniors) Society celebrated World Senior Citizens Day on Friday, August 21, 2026, with a special gathering near South Shore on the Blue Bridge in Chestermere. The event brought together members of the senior community to recognize the value, experience and contributions of older adults.
Society President Janak Singh Khurmi said August 21 is observed to honour senior citizens, recognize their lifelong achievements and raise awareness about elder care and issues associated with ageing. He emphasized the important role seniors continue to play in families and communities through their experience, guidance and contributions.
Joint Secretary Gurraj Singh Virk announced the names of the three senior-most members of the society. Raghbir Singh Virk, born in 1943, was recognized as the senior-most member, while Gurmel Singh Gill, also born in 1943, was recognized as the second senior-most member. Hardeep Singh Grewal, born in 1944, was recognized as the third senior-most member. The society honoured all three with a token of love and appreciation.
Treasurer Atma Singh Gill said the society welcomes suggestions from its members and that the Executive Committee will consider them during its monthly meetings. He encouraged members to continue participating and sharing their ideas to help strengthen the society and its activities.
Secretary Gurmit Singh Gill thanked everyone for participating in the celebration and expressed appreciation for the continued support and cooperation of society members. Fruits were also distributed among the participants as part of the gathering.
The event was attended by Jagjit Singh Grewal, Tejinder Singh Dhanoa, Rajinder Singh Koonar, Rashpal Singh Gill, Gurmail Singh Sidhu, Tarlochan Singh Rai, Gurbhej Singh Jhand, Pritam Singh Grewal, Jagraj Singh Gill, Malkit Singh, Jaswant Singh, Amarjit Singh Toor, Nachhatter Singh, Amarjit Singh Kalkat, Baldev Singh, Randhir Singh, Joginder Singh, Mohinder Singh, Surinder Singh Bala, Gurpal Singh Toor, Sukhdev Singh, Tejmal Singh, Jagrup Singh, Manvinder Singh, Ch. Khalid Jawandha, Sukhmander Singh, Kulwant Singh, Ashwant Singh, Shingara Singh, Swarn Singh and Harnek Rai.
The celebration reflected the society’s commitment to bringing seniors together, recognizing their achievements and promoting respect, dignity and active participation among older adults in the Chestermere community.
