Mohali | Gurpreet Singh: A construction accident in Mohali’s Aerocity area claimed the lives of two workers after part of an under-construction hospital building collapsed at Sector 82. Another worker sustained injuries in the incident.
The collapse prompted an immediate rescue effort at the site, with police personnel and local people working together to search the debris and help those caught in the accident.
Rescuers managed to pull two workers from beneath the rubble. Although labourers at the construction site indicated that they did not believe anyone else remained trapped, authorities continued searching the debris to rule out the possibility of additional casualties.
The injured workers were taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Police teams coordinated the evacuation and shifted those rescued from the site for treatment.
DSP Harsimran Singh Bal said the rescue operation was continuing and that officials were assessing the situation. He added that police personnel were receiving assistance from members of the public during the operation.
The identity of the owner of the under-construction building has not been officially confirmed. Police said preliminary information pointed towards a person named Wadhwa, but stressed that the ownership details were still being verified.
The incident has raised questions over safety arrangements at the construction site. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse, while further assessment is expected to establish what caused the structure to give way.
The authorities are continuing their efforts at the site to ensure that no worker remains trapped and to establish the complete sequence of events leading to the collapse.
