Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): An off-duty RCMP officer in Alberta has been charged with four criminal offences following an investigation into allegations of intimate partner violence in Blackfalds.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed on July 9, 2026, to investigate the allegations involving the officer. After examining the evidence collected during the investigation, ASIRT determined there were reasonable grounds to believe an offence had occurred.
Following a review of the investigation, ASIRT executive director Matthew Block authorised criminal charges against the officer.
The officer was arrested on August 18 and charged with assault, uttering threats, unlawful confinement and intimidation. He was subsequently released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on September 24.
Authorities have not disclosed the officer’s identity because the case involves allegations of intimate partner violence and the decision was made to protect the alleged victim’s privacy.
Katherine Murphy, CEO of the Police Review Commission, said the decision not to identify the officer represents an exception to ASIRT’s usual practice of naming officers facing criminal charges. She said the approach was intended to protect the victim while maintaining transparency regarding the criminal proceedings involving a police officer.
ASIRT said no additional information would be released while the matter is before the courts. Questions concerning the officer’s employment status or whether the officer remains on duty have been directed to the relevant police service.
ASIRT operates under the Police Review Commission as an independent civilian-led agency responsible for investigating potential criminal offences involving police officers across Alberta, including incidents involving serious injury or death.
