Charlottetown (Rajeev Sharma): Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz has welcomed Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders to Charlottetown for the 2026 Council of the Federation (COF) Summer Meeting, saying the gathering comes at a crucial time as the country faces fresh economic uncertainty and rising concerns over affordability.
In a statement issued ahead of the meeting, Lantz said the recent announcement of new tariffs by the United States underscores the need for provincial and federal governments to work closely together to protect Canadian businesses, workers and the broader economy.
Serving as Chair of this year’s Council of the Federation, Lantz said the discussions would focus on key national priorities, including interprovincial trade, affordability, health care, energy security, economic development and public safety. He expressed hope that the premiers would be able to identify common ground and deliver practical outcomes for Canadians.
While leading the national discussions, Lantz said he would also ensure that Prince Edward Island’s priorities receive attention, stressing that federal policies must consider the unique needs of smaller provinces and territories.
He identified affordability as the foremost concern for Islanders, noting that his government has introduced several initiatives to help residents manage rising living costs. These include the $10-a-day childcare program, the Island Essentials Benefit, expanded housing assistance and investments in school food programs. However, he acknowledged that further action would be needed as financial pressures continue to affect families.
Health care also remains a major focus for the province, according to the Premier. He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen primary care services through record investments aimed at attracting and retaining health professionals. At the same time, he called for stable and predictable long-term federal funding to help provinces meet growing health-care demands.
Energy security is another priority expected to feature prominently during the meetings. Lantz said Prince Edward Island requires additional energy infrastructure to support future growth and reiterated the province’s request for federal backing for a new subsea electricity cable, describing it as essential for long-term sustainability.
Reflecting on the significance of hosting the gathering in Charlottetown—the birthplace of both Confederation and the Council of the Federation—Lantz said he hopes the meeting will reflect the same spirit of cooperation that has long defined the Island.
He added that Prince Edward Island looks forward to welcoming Canada’s premiers with its well-known hospitality while working collaboratively to address the challenges facing the country.
