Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s independent police oversight agency is examining two unrelated fatal police shootings involving law enforcement officers in Edmonton and near Cold Lake, with both incidents currently under active investigation.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), acting on directions from the Police Review Commission, has launched Level 1 investigations into the incidents that occurred on June 25 and June 26. Such investigations are mandatory in cases involving deaths, serious injuries, or allegations of significant misconduct by police officers.
The first incident unfolded in south Edmonton after police responded to reports of multiple vehicle collisions involving a black Jeep. Authorities said the vehicle was allegedly linked to several crashes, including one involving an Edmonton Fire Rescue Services truck.
Police later located the damaged vehicle inside the garage of a residence in the Cavanagh neighbourhood. After obtaining a judicial warrant, officers entered the property, where they encountered a man they believed was armed and advancing toward them. During the confrontation, an officer discharged a service weapon, fatally injuring the individual.
Emergency medical assistance was provided immediately, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No police officers or emergency personnel were injured during the operation.
Investigators are continuing to examine evidence collected from the residence and have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses video footage from the area around Christie Vista S.W. to come forward.
In a separate case near Cold Lake, RCMP officers responded to a 911 call reporting an alleged assault and threats involving a firearm at a rural property. According to investigators, officers established a perimeter while monitoring the suspect using aerial surveillance and attempted to resolve the situation through negotiations.
Specialized emergency response personnel and crisis negotiators reportedly spent several hours communicating with the man by telephone in an effort to secure a peaceful surrender.
Police later concluded that the individual appeared to be moving toward a vehicle while allegedly carrying a loaded firearm, raising concerns that he might leave the property. Officers then intervened, and during the ensuing confrontation, at least one RCMP officer opened fire.
The man died at the location before he could be transported for medical treatment.
ASIRT said both investigations remain in the preliminary stages, with investigators working to establish the sequence of events in each case. Officials noted that only limited information can be released at present to protect the integrity of the ongoing inquiries.
The agency reiterated that no conclusions have been reached regarding the actions of the officers involved, and findings will be released after the investigations are completed.
