Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): A fresh phase of monsoon activity is expected to grip Himachal Pradesh from July 6, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall in several districts over the next few days. After a brief break in intense showers, weather conditions are likely to worsen again as a Western Disturbance becomes active across the region.
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Mandi and Sirmaur districts on Monday, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, and Solan have been placed under a Yellow Alert, where moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected.
Alerts Continue on July 7
The weather department has also warned that the rainy spell is likely to continue on July 7. An Orange Alert has been issued for Kangra, Chamba, and Sirmaur, while Shimla, Mandi, and Kullu remain under a Yellow Alert due to the possibility of persistent rain and adverse weather conditions.
Rainfall is expected to continue across much of the state until July 9, although meteorologists believe the intensity could reduce gradually after that.
Wind and Lightning Warning Issued
Besides rainfall, strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are expected in the tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti over the coming days. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely to accompany the rain in several parts of the state, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain indoors during severe weather.
Monsoon Still Performing Above Normal
Despite the recent lull in rainfall, Himachal Pradesh has recorded significantly higher-than-normal precipitation since the beginning of July. The southwest monsoon, which covered the entire state within two days of its arrival, initially brought exceptionally heavy rain, pushing cumulative rainfall well above the seasonal average.
Weather officials say the upcoming spell could further increase rainfall figures and impact vulnerable regions.
People Asked to Stay Alert
The Meteorological Department has advised residents and tourists to avoid rivers, streams, and landslide-prone stretches during heavy rain. Travellers heading towards hill stations have also been urged to monitor weather updates before beginning their journey.
Authorities remain on alert as the fresh weather system is expected to bring another round of widespread rainfall, raising concerns over possible landslides, flash floods, and disruptions to road connectivity in several parts of Himachal Pradesh.
