Massive Search Continues in Shopian as Security Forces Surround Orchard Hiding Two Suspected LeT Militants

Shopian

Shopian (Rajeev Sharma): Security forces remained engaged in an intensive anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday, maintaining a tight security cordon around an orchard where two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants are believed to be trapped.

The operation was launched after surveillance inputs reportedly confirmed the presence of the two local militants in the Meemandar area. Acting on the intelligence, teams from the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) moved into the locality and sealed the surrounding villages to prevent any escape.

Officials said the suspects allegedly fired at security personnel after being challenged, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Since then, forces have continued the operation cautiously, given the dense vegetation that offers natural concealment.

To strengthen the operation, additional troops have been deployed at strategic locations around the orchard. Security personnel have established multiple layers of checkpoints and observation positions to monitor every possible escape route, while specialised counter-insurgency teams continue to comb the area.

According to security agencies, the two militants have been identified as Latif and Zakir, both residents of Kulgam district. Preliminary records suggest that Zakir joined the banned terror outfit in 2024, while Latif became associated with the organisation in 2025.

Authorities said the operation is being conducted with careful planning to minimise risks to civilians. Residents living near the search area have been advised to remain indoors, while movement in and around the affected villages has been restricted until the operation is completed.

Officials noted that orchards in south Kashmir often become difficult operational zones during the summer months because thick foliage reduces visibility and provides militants with opportunities to evade detection.

Security experts believe eliminating local militant networks remains a key priority, as such operatives are frequently involved in recruitment, logistics and facilitating terrorist activities in the Valley.

The search operation is expected to continue until security forces fully secure the area and account for the two suspected militants. Further updates are awaited as the operation progresses.
