Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): PGIMER healthcare facilities and railway station redevelopment among projects likely to be unveiled; official schedule awaited
Authorities in Chandigarh have stepped up preparations ahead of the proposed visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, during which several high-value development projects are expected to be inaugurated. While the Prime Minister’s Office has not yet released the official programme, government departments have begun coordinating arrangements for the anticipated event.
According to sources, the Prime Minister is expected to dedicate major healthcare infrastructure at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) besides unveiling other public infrastructure initiatives. Following the Chandigarh engagements, he may also travel to neighbouring Haryana for official programmes.
One of the key projects awaiting inauguration is the Advanced Eye and Trauma Centre at PGIMER. Developed at an estimated cost of nearly ₹495 crore, the facility has been designed to enhance specialised treatment and includes modern operation theatres, diagnostic laboratories, ENT services, academic spaces and patient support amenities.
Another significant addition is the Mother and Child Block, built at an approximate investment of ₹485 crore. The new facility is expected to strengthen maternal and paediatric healthcare services while expanding PGIMER’s treatment capacity.
Officials also indicated that the Prime Minister could inaugurate the redeveloped Chandigarh Railway Station, a project worth around ₹117 crore. The upgraded station features modern passenger facilities, improved circulation areas and a redesigned city-centre integration aimed at offering a better travel experience.
Administrative departments have reportedly started reviewing logistics, traffic management and security arrangements in view of the proposed visit. Senior officials are expected to hold multiple coordination meetings over the next few days to ensure smooth execution of the programme.
If the visit takes place as planned, projects valued at more than ₹1,000 crore will be formally dedicated, reflecting a strong emphasis on healthcare expansion and infrastructure development in the Union Territory.
Although an official confirmation is still awaited, preparations are progressing at full pace as authorities remain on standby for the Prime Minister’s likely arrival later this month.
