India Weighs Participation as Iran Extends Invitation for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Memorial Ceremonies

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): India is assessing an invitation from Iran to participate in the memorial and funeral events being organised for late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with a decision on the country’s representation expected in the coming days, according to diplomatic sources.

The ceremonies, scheduled for early July, are set to take place across multiple Iranian cities and are expected to attract heads of state, senior ministers and international delegations from around the world. Iranian authorities have reportedly reached out to several countries with which Tehran shares longstanding diplomatic ties, including India.

Officials familiar with the matter said New Delhi is carefully evaluating the invitation while considering diplomatic schedules, regional developments and the level of representation that would be appropriate for the occasion. No final decision has been announced by the Indian government so far.

The passing of Khamenei earlier this year marked a major turning point in Iran’s political landscape. As the country’s highest authority for decades, he played a central role in shaping Iran’s domestic governance and foreign policy. His death has triggered a period of transition within the Islamic Republic, alongside weeks of national mourning.

India and Iran have maintained a multifaceted relationship over the years, cooperating in areas such as trade, connectivity, energy and regional development projects. The Chabahar Port initiative remains one of the key pillars of bilateral engagement, providing strategic connectivity between South Asia and Central Asia.

Sources indicated that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not attend the ceremonies personally, India could send a senior-level delegation to represent the country. However, discussions within the government are still underway and no official confirmation has been issued.

Meanwhile, Indian authorities continue to monitor developments in Iran. The Indian Embassy has advised citizens to remain cautious and stay updated through official channels, even as the overall security situation in the country has shown signs of improvement in recent weeks.

The upcoming ceremonies are expected to be among the most significant state events held in Iran in recent history, drawing global attention as the nation honours one of its most influential leaders and navigates a new political chapter.
