Gurpreet Singh: In a major move to transform India’s digital landscape, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Jio Chairman Akash Ambani have unveiled a comprehensive technology strategy at the company’s 49th Annual General Meeting. The ambitious plan outlines a massive expansion into sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure and space-based internet connectivity, signalling a significant evolution from traditional terrestrial telecommunications to an independent, cloud-based computing and satellite ecosystem.
Central to this digital push is the “Reliance Intelligence” initiative, designed to address the critical shortage and high cost of advanced computing power within the country. The cornerstone of this project is a state-of-the-art AI data centre under construction in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with an initial capacity of 120 Megawatts scheduled to go live by the end of 2026. To ensure long-term sustainability and keep operational costs low, the entire facility will run on clean energy supplied by the company’s extensive solar generation operations in Kutch. The data centre will initially house a specialized fleet of advanced Nvidia GB300 systems, delivering compute capabilities equivalent to more than 75,000 Nvidia H100 graphics processing units, with scaling plans aimed at crossing the 200,000 H100-equivalent mark. This localized infrastructure aims to provide secure, sovereign cloud hosting, ensuring complete data portability and tailored digital services across 22 recognized Indian languages.
In tandem with hardware developments, the technology conglomerate is integrating artificial intelligence directly into the fabric of its telecommunications network through deep global partnerships. Collaborative efforts with Google will grant users streamlined access to advanced Gemini-backed models, while a joint venture with Meta focuses on adapting the open-source LLaMA ecosystem for local enterprises. Among the standout features introduced is the Jio Call Agent, an automated, voice-first network assistant capable of joining regular phone conversations to provide real-time multi-language translation, transcription, and automated service booking without requiring external applications. Additionally, a new cloud layer called Jio TeleFrame will allow local developers to build and deploy smart household AI agents.
To bridge connectivity gaps in deep rural pockets, isolated border regions, and island territories where traditional cell towers are impractical, Reliance is simultaneously deploying a dual-track space strategy. The company has submitted a comprehensive proposal to the space regulator IN-SPACe to develop and launch a proprietary, low-orbit satellite constellation operating at an altitude of approximately 650 kilometres to provide direct-to-device connectivity. Recognizing the timeline required to manufacture a proprietary orbital fleet, Jio is adopting a hybrid model by leasing immediate satellite capacity from international providers. However, all critical data processing and last-mile routing will remain legally anchored on domestic soil via an expansive network of proprietary ground stations currently being built within the country.
