France (Rajeev Sharma): US President Donald Trump has described the newly signed peace agreement between the United States and Iran as the result of difficult negotiations, saying the breakthrough marks an important step toward ending months of conflict and restoring stability in the region.
The agreement was formally signed during a high-level gathering at the Palace of Versailles in France after the conclusion of the G7 Summit. Moments before signing the memorandum, Trump acknowledged the complexity of the process, telling those present that reaching the accord had not been easy.
Following the ceremony, the US President confirmed that the document had been signed, while images released by Iranian officials showed President Masoud Pezeshkian holding the completed agreement, signalling Tehran’s participation in the diplomatic initiative.
The memorandum outlines a broad framework intended to halt hostilities and create conditions for a lasting settlement. Among its immediate provisions are the suspension of military operations, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping and the lifting of the US naval blockade, measures expected to ease tensions and stabilise global energy supplies.
The document also proposes a structured dialogue over the next 60 days to negotiate a comprehensive agreement addressing unresolved political and security issues. It includes provisions related to phased sanctions relief, the release of Iranian financial assets and economic cooperation aimed at supporting long-term development.
A significant aspect of the understanding concerns Iran’s nuclear programme. According to the framework, Tehran has reiterated that it will not pursue nuclear weapons, while future discussions on enriched uranium reserves are expected to take place under international oversight through the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Iranian officials welcomed the signing but stressed that the focus must now shift from diplomacy to implementation. Government representatives said the success of the memorandum would ultimately depend on whether both parties honour their commitments in practice.
The agreement has received positive reactions from several countries. French President Emmanuel Macron described the development as a meaningful advance towards regional peace and expressed hope that renewed maritime access would contribute to greater economic stability and lower energy costs worldwide.
Pakistan also welcomed the accord, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif saying the understanding reflected the willingness of both Washington and Tehran to resolve their differences through negotiations. He added that the immediate implementation of the memorandum would help reduce regional tensions and encourage further diplomatic engagement.
International observers believe the agreement could have significant geopolitical and economic implications, particularly if it leads to uninterrupted navigation through one of the world’s busiest energy corridors and opens the door for broader cooperation between the two countries.
While the signing represents a major diplomatic achievement, analysts note that the coming weeks will be crucial, as the effectiveness of the accord will depend on sustained political commitment and successful execution of its key provisions. If fully implemented, the agreement could mark the beginning of a new chapter in relations between the United States and Iran after an extended period of confrontation.
