France (Rajeev Sharma): Finally, a sigh of relief as the US President Donald Trump has signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described the newly signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran as a landmark diplomatic achievement, expressing hope that the agreement will pave the way for lasting peace and greater cooperation across the region.
In a statement issued after the electronic signing of the memorandum, Sharif said the accord reflects the determination of both Washington and Tehran to settle their differences through dialogue and negotiation instead of military confrontation. He noted that the agreement had received approval at the highest level of leadership in both countries, with Pakistan serving as the mediator in the process.
The Prime Minister announced that the memorandum would take effect immediately, with the first phase including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran and the removal of the US naval blockade. He said these measures would help ease regional tensions and restore confidence in international maritime trade.
Sharif praised US President Donald Trump for supporting diplomatic engagement and credited the American negotiating team for helping steer the discussions towards a peaceful outcome. He remarked that sustained dialogue had prevented a crisis that could have had serious consequences beyond the Middle East.
The Pakistani leader also acknowledged the role of Iran’s leadership, appreciating the willingness shown by its top officials to pursue negotiations and embrace a peaceful settlement. He commended the Iranian delegation for its commitment and constructive participation throughout the talks.
In addition, Sharif highlighted the contribution of several regional countries that supported the mediation efforts. He expressed gratitude to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt for their diplomatic engagement, stating that their cooperation played an important part in facilitating consensus between the two sides.
Special recognition was also given to Pakistan’s military leadership, with Sharif noting that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had played a significant role in supporting the mediation initiative and advancing efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.
Calling the agreement a foundation for future cooperation, the Prime Minister said the memorandum has the potential to strengthen mutual trust and encourage a new era of stability and economic progress across the wider region. He expressed optimism that continued engagement between the parties would lead to broader understandings on key strategic issues.
The announcement comes at a time when global attention remains focused on developments in West Asia, with observers closely watching the implementation of the agreement and its possible impact on regional security, energy supply chains and international diplomacy. If successfully carried forward, the understanding could mark a significant turning point in efforts to promote long-term peace and stability in the region.
