Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Issues Fresh Warning to India Over Indus Waters Treaty Suspension

Islamabad (Rajeev Sharma): Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced that the United States and Iran have finalized a peace agreement after extensive diplomatic engagement, with the official signing ceremony slated to take place in Switzerland on June 19.

Making the announcement through a post on X, Sharif described the development as a significant diplomatic achievement and said both countries had agreed to end military operations permanently across all fronts, including Lebanon. He added that the coming days would see a series of coordination meetings aimed at preparing for the implementation phase before the accord is formally endorsed.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the willingness of Washington and Tehran to pursue dialogue and credited several regional partners for helping bridge differences during the negotiations. He specifically thanked Qatar for its mediation efforts and appreciated the support extended by the leadership of Saudi Arabia and Türkiye in facilitating the peace process.

According to Sharif, the upcoming discussions before the signing ceremony will focus on technical aspects of the agreement and create a roadmap for its execution once it comes into force.

The announcement came shortly after US President Donald Trump also indicated that a peace agreement had been reached, a development that is expected to ease geopolitical uncertainty and provide reassurance to global financial and energy markets. However, the contents of the agreement have not yet been disclosed publicly.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed that negotiations had concluded successfully but stated that Tehran would begin implementing the provisions only after the agreement is officially signed later this week.

Pakistan has played an increasingly visible role in facilitating communication between Washington and Tehran, working alongside Qatar to sustain diplomatic contacts. Earlier mediation efforts had resulted in a temporary ceasefire that remained in effect while negotiations progressed.

Reacting to the announcement, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari welcomed the agreement, describing it as an encouraging step towards resolving regional disputes through diplomacy rather than conflict.

Bilawal praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for guiding the mediation initiative and acknowledged the efforts of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and diplomatic teams involved in the negotiations. He also credited Pakistan’s military leadership for supporting initiatives aimed at promoting peace and regional stability.

The peace initiative follows months of intense hostilities that resulted in heavy losses for Iran’s political and military leadership. Among those reported killed during the conflict were Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior security officials, leading to a major leadership transition in Tehran.

While expectations are high ahead of the June 19 signing ceremony, analysts believe the long-term success of the accord will depend on how effectively both countries implement their commitments and sustain diplomatic engagement in the months ahead.
