Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre met with Calgary residents during a community meet-and-greet event on Saturday, where he delivered a sharp critique of the Liberal government’s fiscal policies and warned that Canada’s growing national debt is placing an increasing burden on families across the country.

Poilievre was joined by Calgary East MP Jasraj Singh Hallan, Conservative supporter Dalvinder Gill, and community leader Jagdharan Singh Mahal of Edmonton. The gathering provided local residents with an opportunity to engage directly with Conservative leaders on the economic challenges facing Canadians.
Addressing the crowd, Poilievre argued that years of excessive government spending have fuelled record debt levels, higher interest costs, and mounting affordability pressures. He said Canadian families are paying the price through rising living expenses, housing costs, and diminished purchasing power.
“Canadians are working harder than ever but finding it increasingly difficult to get ahead,” Poilievre said, emphasizing the need for fiscal discipline, responsible budgeting, and policies designed to restore economic stability and affordability.

MP Jasraj Singh Hallan, the Conservative Party’s finance critic, echoed those concerns and stressed that Ottawa must focus on prudent financial management. Hallan has repeatedly criticized Liberal economic policies in Parliament, arguing that runaway deficits and uncontrolled spending have weakened Canada’s economic competitiveness and placed future generations under a heavier debt burden. He called for policies that encourage investment, support job creation, and provide relief to struggling families and small businesses.
The Conservative leaders said their focus remains on restoring affordability, reducing unnecessary spending, and creating conditions for stronger economic growth. The Calgary event highlighted the party’s efforts to connect directly with Canadians and reinforce its message of fiscal responsibility at a time when concerns over the cost of living continue to dominate public discussion.
The comments from Poilievre and Hallan reflect the Conservatives’ broader economic message that Canada needs disciplined spending, lower financial pressures on households, and a renewed focus on building a stronger economy for future generations.
