Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing to Embark on Strategic Five-Day Official Visit to India

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing will undertake a five-day official visit to India beginning Saturday, May 30, 2026, marking a critical diplomatic milestone aimed at reinforcing strategic, economic, and civilisational ties between the two neighbouring nations. The high-profile visit comes at the explicit invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and represents President Min Aung Hlaing’s first foreign trip since officially assuming the presidency in April.

The state visit occurs at a crucial juncture as New Delhi actively seeks to strengthen its regional outreach under its “Neighbourhood First”, “Act East”, and “MAHASAGAR” policies. Originally, the Myanmar leader was scheduled to arrive in India to attend the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit on June 1. However, following the deferral of that summit, the itinerary was restructured into a dedicated bilateral state visit. President Min Aung Hlaing will be accompanied by a senior delegation consisting of several Cabinet ministers, high-ranking military and civil officials, and prominent business leaders, underscoring the deep mutual importance both sides place on this engagement.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the centerpieces of the visit are the high-level bilateral discussions scheduled with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on June 1. The talks are expected to comprehensively cover cross-border security cooperation along the shared 1,600-kilometre frontier, maritime stability in the Bay of Bengal, and the revival of longstanding trilateral connectivity projects. The Myanmar President’s itinerary also highlights historical ties, beginning with a visit to the sacred Buddhist site of Bodh Gaya on May 30, followed by an economic segment in Mumbai on June 2, where he will participate in industrial interactions to shore up bilateral trade, investment, and defence cooperation.
