Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh/Balwinder Singh): The Bharatiya Janata Party has unveiled a fresh leadership lineup for Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, with senior Punjab leader Kewal Singh Dhillon being appointed as the new chief of the party’s Punjab unit.
The move comes as the BJP begins reorganising its state structure ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, where the party is expected to aggressively expand its political presence.
The announcement was made through an official communication issued by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh after approval from the party’s central leadership. Alongside Punjab, the BJP also announced Archana Gupta as Haryana BJP president and Harsh Malhotra as the new Delhi unit chief.
Dhillon, a veteran politician from Barnala district, replaces Sunil Jakhar, whose tenure as Punjab BJP president was nearing its conclusion. Sources within the party indicate that Jakhar will remain actively involved in campaign planning and political strategy for the upcoming Assembly polls.
A prominent face in Punjab politics for decades, Dhillon served as MLA from Barnala for two consecutive terms. He later joined the BJP in 2022 after parting ways with the Congress in the aftermath of the state elections.
Following his induction into the BJP, Dhillon was elevated as vice-president of the Punjab unit and gradually became one of the party’s important Sikh leaders in the state.
Party insiders believe the leadership change reflects the BJP’s attempt to strengthen its organisational network and improve outreach in rural and Malwa regions of Punjab. The appointment is also being viewed as an effort to present a stronger Sikh leadership face within the state BJP ahead of future electoral contests.
With political activity already intensifying in Punjab, the BJP is expected to focus on cadre expansion, local alliances and booth-level strengthening under the new leadership structure.
