Prime Minister Modi Meets US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New Delhi, Accepts White House Invitation

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon to review the expanding trajectory of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Rubio, who arrived in the national capital following a brief symbolic transit stopover in Kolkata, extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Modi on behalf of US President Donald Trump to visit Washington for an official state visit at the White House in the near future. The high-level encounter marks a strategic effort by both administrations to recalibrate and stabilize bilateral dynamics, which had faced notable diplomatic and trade headwinds since the middle of last year.

During the expansive session, Rubio, accompanied by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, briefed the Prime Minister on steady operational progress achieved across a wide spectrum of bilateral sectors. The deliberate consultations centered heavily on deepening joint defense manufacturing, accelerating the co-development of critical and emerging strategic technologies, expanding cross-border commercial investment, and stabilizing maritime connectivity. Sharing the update on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi noted that he was happy to receive the US Secretary of State and emphasized that their discussions also encompassed vital matters linked directly to regional security and global peace efforts.

A major theme of the bilateral talks involved navigating the escalating West Asia crisis and its direct fallout on global energy security. With international energy markets highly vulnerable to maritime shipping disruptions, Rubio shared Washington’s perspective on expanding American crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports to solidify India’s supply-side resilience. In response to the ongoing geopolitical friction points, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed New Delhi’s consistent support for constructive peace efforts, reiterating India’s principled call for the immediate resolution of global conflicts through active dialogue and institutional diplomacy.

The first leg of Rubio’s maiden four-day tour of India carried deep historical and cultural significance, marking the first visit by an American Secretary of State to Kolkata since 2012. Upon landing in the eastern metropolis on Saturday morning, Rubio immediately traveled to the Mother House—the global headquarters of Saint Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity—to pay his respects and interact with the administrative nuns. Accompanied by Ambassador Gor, he also toured the Nirmala Shishu Bhavan children’s home and the iconic Victoria Memorial before flying to New Delhi. Rubio’s intense diplomatic itinerary will continue on Sunday with scheduled delegation-level talks alongside External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, followed by cultural excursions to Agra and Jaipur, before he returns to the national capital on Tuesday morning to lead the American delegation at the high-stakes Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. In an unrelated domestic development in Haryana, the Hisar district police issued a public advisory warning internet users against clicking fraudulent phishing links circulating on social messaging platforms that mimic online membership drives for the satirical group known as the Cockroach Janata Party.
