EXPLOSIVE 2,400% SPIKE IN EXTORTION CASES IN SURREY: SPS URGES PUBLIC TO COME FORWARD AS CASES SURPASS 2025 TOTALS EARLY

Surrey ( Rajeev Sharma): The Surrey Police Service (SPS) has reported a dramatic surge in extortion-related investigations, internally tracked under its “South Asian Series” classification, with cases rising by 2,400% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.

Police say extortion in Surrey has seen a significant increase, particularly targeting members of the South Asian business community. As of late April 2026, SPS reported 91 extortion cases already this year, compared to 133 total cases recorded throughout all of 2025, indicating a sharp early-year escalation. The reported incidents include threats, intimidation, and financial extortion attempts directed at residents and business owners across the city. SPS confirms these cases are under active investigation, with efforts underway to identify potential links or patterns.

Police have not released detailed breakdowns of individual files but say the rise represents a serious public safety concern. SPS is urging the public to come forward with any information, including messages, recordings, or CCTV footage, that could assist ongoing investigations. Officials stress that community cooperation is critical to solving cases and preventing further incidents.

Authorities also emphasize that early reporting can help investigators intervene faster and reduce the risk of escalation or repeat targeting. SPS continues to work with regional and federal partners as investigations remain ongoing.
