Ontario (Rajeev Sharma): Authorities in Canada have arrested five individuals of Punjabi origin in connection with a major cargo theft investigation that led to the recovery of cannabis products valued at nearly $2 million.
The case dates back to April 15, 2026, when officers from the Auto Cargo Theft Unit were probing suspicious activity near Mississauga, specifically around the McLaughlin Road and Highway 401 corridor. During the operation, investigators located a trailer that had earlier been reported stolen from the Niagara Region.
Police confirmed that the trailer was transporting a significant shipment of cannabis intended for distribution to multiple licensed dispensaries when it was intercepted. Acting on leads developed during the investigation, officers tracked down several suspects believed to be linked to the theft.
Five individuals were subsequently taken into custody from different locations, primarily in the Greater Toronto Area. The accused include residents of Brampton and Hamilton, all facing a range of serious charges.
According to officials, the charges include theft of a motor vehicle exceeding $5,000 in value, possession and trafficking of property obtained through crime, and multiple firearm-related offences. These include unauthorized possession of firearms, possession of restricted or prohibited weapons, and carrying firearms in a vehicle without legal authorization.
Law enforcement agencies stated that the recovery of the stolen cargo marks a significant breakthrough in tackling organised cargo theft operations. Investigators are continuing to examine whether the accused are connected to a broader network involved in similar crimes across the region.
Police have not ruled out further arrests as the probe progresses.
