Delhi Braces for Intense Heat as IMD Issues Orange Alert

IMD warns of heatwave in Punjab, Haryana till May 23, Light Rain from May 24 onwards

Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The national capital Delhi is set to witness a sharp rise in temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department warning of heatwave-like conditions and issuing an orange alert for parts of the city.

According to the weather office, the maximum temperature is likely to climb to around 44°C on Sunday, signalling a spell of intense heat. While the day began on a relatively cooler note with the minimum temperature recorded slightly below normal, conditions are expected to turn significantly harsher as the day progresses.

Meteorologists have predicted a partly cloudy sky, but this is unlikely to provide much relief from the rising mercury. Residents have been advised to limit outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and stay hydrated.

Humidity levels in the morning were recorded at moderate levels, adding to the discomfort. Meanwhile, air quality in the city remained a concern, with data from the Central Pollution Control Board placing the Air Quality Index in the ‘poor’ category.

Health experts have cautioned that prolonged exposure to such conditions could lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging citizens to follow advisories as the capital endures another spell of extreme summer weather.
