Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): The Government of Alberta has announced the formation of a new advisory body aimed at strengthening economic engagement with China, its second-largest trading partner.
The Alberta-China Advisory Committee has been established to guide the province’s strategy on trade expansion and investment opportunities, particularly in sectors such as energy, agriculture and agri-food. Officials say the panel will provide specialised insights to help Alberta tap into emerging opportunities in the Chinese market while ensuring long-term economic growth.
Data from 2025 highlights the importance of the partnership, with Alberta’s exports to China reaching nearly $9.6 billion. The Asian nation remains a key destination for the province’s goods, second only to the United States. A major boost has come from rising crude oil shipments, which surged following the completion of the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline, with exports touching over 220,000 barrels per day.
The committee held its first meeting on April 8, ahead of an official trade mission to China led by Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson, who will also chair the group. The panel brings together experts from business, academia and public policy to help shape Alberta’s international trade approach.
Premier Danielle Smith emphasised that China remains a critical market for Alberta’s commodities and energy exports. She noted that a structured and strategic approach would help improve market access and attract investment that supports job creation and economic expansion.
The initiative also aligns with broader efforts by Canada to enhance economic ties in the region, as policymakers look to diversify trade partnerships and strengthen global supply chains.
Officials believe the new committee will play a key role in ensuring Alberta remains competitive in international markets while positioning itself as a reliable supplier of essential resources.
