Nishant Kumar to Join JD(U) and Ascend to Deputy CM Role; Nitish Kumar Pivots to Rajya Sabha

Patna (Gurpreet Singh) — In a move that cements a total generational shift in Bihar’s governance, Nishant Kumar, the son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is set to formally join the Janata Dal (United) on Sunday and is slated to be appointed as the state’s Deputy Chief Minister. According to close aides of the Chief Minister, the decision has already been finalized to induct Nishant into the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) and subsequently elevate him to the high-ranking executive post. This development follows only two days after Nitish Kumar filed his nomination papers for the March 16 Rajya Sabha elections, signaling the conclusion of his historic tenure as the state’s longest-serving leader.

The formal induction will take place at the JD(U) headquarters in Patna in the presence of senior ministers, MPs, and legislators. The groundwork for this transition was established on Friday during an extensive meeting at the residence of the party’s national working president, Sanjay Jha, where Nishant discussed future strategies with party lawmakers. Minister Shravan Kumar, a key figure in the cabinet, was also present during these deliberations. Analysts view this rapid ascent as a carefully choreographed succession plan designed to maintain the party’s stability as Nitish Kumar moves to the national political stage in New Delhi.

Initially, JD(U) legislators expressed anxiety regarding Nitish Kumar’s sudden transition to the Rajya Sabha. However, during a gathering at the Chief Minister’s residence on Friday evening, the veteran leader reassured his colleagues that the decision was entirely his own and made without external pressure. Nitish Kumar also emphasized that he would continue to be available to provide guidance and mentorship to party workers from his new position in the capital.

State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary confirmed the “green signal” for Nishant’s entry into active politics, while aides later clarified the plan for his appointment as an MLC and Deputy CM. As the March 16 elections approach, all eyes are on the JD(U) headquarters for the formal ceremony that will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Bihar’s political history, with the next generation of the Kumar family taking a central role in the state’s administration.
