“Cynical Murder”: Vladimir Putin Condemns Killing of Ayatollah Khamenei as Breach of International Law

Moscow (Rajeev Sharma): Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, March 1, 2026, issued a scathing condemnation of the targeted killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing the act as a “cynical murder” that violates the fundamental norms of human morality and international law. In a formal condolence note addressed to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and released by the Kremlin, Putin expressed his deep personal grief over the loss of the 86-year-old leader, who was killed alongside members of his family during a massive joint military operation by the United States and Israel on Saturday.

The Russian leader lauded Khamenei as an “outstanding statesman” whose vision was instrumental in elevating the relationship between Moscow and Tehran to the level of a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” Under Khamenei’s long-standing leadership, Russia and Iran significantly deepened their military, energy, and economic ties, particularly in the face of shared Western sanctions. Putin’s statement emphasized that the Supreme Leader’s personal contribution to these friendly relations would be remembered as a cornerstone of modern Russian foreign policy in the Middle East.

“Please accept my deep condolences in connection with the murder of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family, committed in cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law,” the Kremlin statement read. Putin also extended his “most sincere sympathy and support” to the bereaved family, the Iranian government, and the people of Iran as the nation enters a 40-day period of official mourning.

The Kremlin’s reaction comes as Russia and China have reportedly called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to discuss the “unprecedented aggression” against a sovereign state’s leadership. Global geopolitical analysts suggest that the elimination of Khamenei could trigger a major shift in the Moscow-Tehran axis, though Putin’s immediate rhetoric signals that Russia intends to stand firmly by its strategic ally. As the region braces for potential retaliation from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Moscow’s vocal support adds a significant layer of diplomatic complexity to the unfolding conflict.
