Maharashtra Cancels 5% Muslim Reservation in Jobs and Education After Ordinance Lapses

Mumbai (Gurpreet Singh): The Maharashtra government has officially withdrawn the five per cent reservation for members of the Muslim community in government jobs and educational institutions, issuing a Government Resolution (GR) on Tuesday.

The decision comes after the earlier ordinance granting the quota lapsed and remains under an interim stay by the court.

According to the new GR, all previous provisions related to the five per cent reservation for socially and educationally backward Muslims under the Special Backward Category (A) have been cancelled. The withdrawal applies to recruitment in government and semi-government services as well as admissions in educational institutions.

The reservation was originally introduced in 2014 by the then Congress-NCP government through an ordinance that provided 16 per cent quota for the Maratha community and five per cent for Muslims.

With the latest order, the state has also scrapped earlier circulars and policy decisions linked to the Muslim quota. Authorities have been directed to stop issuing caste and non-creamy layer certificates to Muslims under the Special Backward Category.

The government said the move aligns with the legal position following the lapse of the ordinance and ongoing judicial proceedings related to the policy.
