The decision is expected to benefit thousands of Indian nationals, including a substantial number from Punjab, who have been living in the country without formal documentation.
Under the proposed framework, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria. Authorities have indicated that individuals seeking legal status must have no criminal record and must demonstrate continuous residence in Spain for a stipulated period prior to the cut-off date. The application process is expected to begin in the coming months, with detailed guidelines to be issued by the government.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s administration has defended the move as both a humanitarian and economic necessity. Officials argue that migrants play a crucial role in sustaining key sectors of the Spanish economy, particularly construction, agriculture and services, where labor shortages have intensified.
