New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The Indian cricket camp is monitoring the health of young opener Abhishek Sharma after he was hospitalised with a stomach infection, putting his participation in the T20 World Cup fixture against Namibia in serious doubt.
The left-hander has been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Delhi for the past couple of days. According to sources familiar with the situation, medical tests are ongoing to identify the exact cause of the infection, and doctors have not yet confirmed when he will be fit for discharge.
“Abhishek is undergoing treatment for a stomach ailment. The doctors are still assessing his condition, so it’s uncertain if he will recover in time. As of now, playing against Namibia appears unlikely,” a BCCI official said.
While the immediate focus is on his recovery, the team management is hopeful that Sharma will be available for the marquee clash against Pakistan in Colombo on February 15, provided his condition improves steadily over the next few days.
It has also emerged that Sharma attended a team dinner at head coach Gautam Gambhir’s residence on Sunday but left earlier than his teammates after feeling unwell.
Abhishek has been an important part of India’s batting plans with his attacking intent at the top of the order. His potential absence could prompt the selectors and team management to consider alternate combinations for the Namibia match, with a final decision expected after further medical evaluation.
