Trump Criticizes Olympic Skier Hunter Hess After Athlete Voices Concerns About U.S. Climate

Washington (Rajeev Sharma): — U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday criticized Olympic freestyle skier Hunter Hess, calling him a “real loser” after the athlete spoke about having “mixed emotions” while representing the United States at the Winter Olympics.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that Hess had suggested he did not fully represent his country during the Games and questioned his place on the national team. The president said it was “hard to root” for an athlete expressing such sentiments.

Hess, a native of Bend, Oregon, told reporters last week that wearing the American flag did not mean he supported everything happening in the country. He said the current situation in the U.S. was difficult for many people and that, for him, competing was more about representing his family, community and the positive values he associates with the nation.

His remarks came as several Team USA freestyle skiers were asked about the domestic political environment. Teammate Chris Lillis said he felt “heartbroken” over recent events in the United States and emphasized the importance of respecting people’s rights and treating everyone with dignity.

Another skier, Quinn Dehlinger, noted that political divisions in the country were significant but said sports had the power to unite people.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said its priority was ensuring Hess had the support and protection needed to compete. The organization also warned of a growing trend of abusive messages directed at athletes during major competitions and said it monitors threats and works with law enforcement when necessary.

The committee issued a similar statement after figure skater Amber Glenn reported receiving hateful messages following questions about U.S. politics.

Hess’ comments and Trump’s response drew reactions across the political spectrum. Some conservative figures criticized the skier’s remarks, arguing that athletes representing the country should express pride in the nation.

However, Senator Bernie Sanders defended Hess, stating that Americans are free to express their views and emphasizing that the United States is not a monarchy.

The episode is the latest instance of political debate intersecting with international sports, as Team USA athletes navigate heightened public attention both for their performances and their personal views.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended Olympic events in Milan over the weekend. In remarks to athletes earlier, Vance said Americans across political lines were united in supporting Team USA.
