RCMP Rule Out Criminal Charges in Fatal Crash That Killed Three Alberta Junior Hockey Players

Stavely, Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) say the highway crash that claimed the lives of three Alberta junior hockey players earlier this week is believed to have been a tragic accident, with no criminal charges expected.

Claresholm RCMP responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision near the town of Stavely, south of Calgary, at around 11 a.m. on Monday. The crash involved a passenger car and a semi-truck hauling gravel at the intersection of Highway 2 and Secondary Road 527.

“This occurred in the northbound lane of Highway 2,” said Corporal Gina Slaney of the Alberta RCMP on Tuesday. “Preliminary investigation shows the semi was travelling northbound, while the passenger vehicle was heading eastbound across Highway 2 at the time of the collision.”

Police said the intersection is not controlled by traffic lights, and vehicles travelling southbound must cross two northbound lanes to enter the town. Slaney added that weather conditions were clear at the time of the crash and visibility was not an issue for either driver.

According to RCMP data, there have been three injury-related collisions at the same intersection since 2019. Two of those incidents, including Monday’s crash and another in 2025, resulted in fatalities. However, Slaney stressed that the location is not considered an unsafe intersection.

“It’s important to understand that while this intersection has seen serious collisions, it is not classified as dangerous,” she said.

The victims were identified as Caden Fine, JJ Wright and Cameron Casorso, all members of the Southern Alberta Mustangs junior hockey team. Their deaths have deeply affected the local community and the wider hockey fraternity.

“Any fatality on a Canadian highway hits close to home,” Slaney said. “Stavely is a small, close-knit community, and this loss has been especially painful for those connected to the hockey community. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

RCMP said the investigation into the collision is ongoing, but the findings will be shared directly with the families of the victims and the other driver. Given that the incident is being treated as an accident, police do not expect to release further updates to the media.
