National Times Bureau :- Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia was released from Nabha Jail on Sunday after securing bail from the Supreme Court in a disproportionate assets case. Majithia stepped out of the prison premises around 11 am, where a large number of party supporters had gathered to welcome him.
Majithia was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 in connection with a case alleging assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The case reportedly pertains to properties valued at around ₹540 crore. He had remained in judicial custody for nearly seven months prior to being granted bail.
Supreme Court’s Observations
During the hearing, the Supreme Court bench questioned the Punjab government on the necessity of continued incarceration, noting that Majithia had already spent a considerable period in jail. The court took into account the overall circumstances of the case while granting bail.
The apex court also observed that Majithia had earlier been granted bail in an NDPS case in 2022. A petition filed by the state government seeking cancellation of that bail was dismissed by the Supreme Court in 2025, a factor that weighed during the present proceedings.
Security Concerns Raised Earlier
It is pertinent to note that during a previous hearing, Majithia had sought interim bail citing a threat to his life. While granting relief, the court stated that the decision was based on the prevailing facts and legal considerations, without expressing any opinion on the merits of the case.
Political Reactions Awaited
Following his release, slogans were raised by supporters outside the jail, reflecting strong backing from party workers. Political reactions from rival parties and the state government are expected in the coming days as the legal process continues.
The investigation in the disproportionate assets case will proceed as per law, with the matter remaining sub judice.
