Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on Canadian Goods Over Trade Deal With China

Ottawa/Washington (Rajeev Sharma): US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a sweeping 100 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States if Ottawa proceeds with its newly announced trade agreement with China.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump strongly criticised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, warning against what he described as Canada becoming a transit hub for Chinese exports into the US market.

“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the USA,” Trump said. He further alleged that Carney was attempting to turn Canada into a “drop-off port” for Chinese goods destined for the United States, adding that such a move would not be tolerated by his administration.

The sharp remarks come after Canada announced a “landmark deal” with China as part of a new strategic partnership aimed at expanding trade ties and reducing Ottawa’s heavy economic dependence on the United States.

Canada has been working to diversify its trade relationships amid ongoing tariff pressures from Washington. Nearly 70 per cent of Canadian exports currently go to the US, making the Canadian economy particularly vulnerable to American trade actions.

While the Canadian government has not yet officially responded to Trump’s latest threat, officials have previously stated that the country’s trade decisions are guided by national interest and economic stability.

The warning signals a further escalation in trade tensions between the two longtime allies, even as Canada seeks to rebalance its global trade strategy by strengthening ties with China and other major economies.
