Rakesh Aggarwal Appointed Director General of National Investigation Agency

New Delhi ( Rajeev Sharma): In a major boost to India’s internal security and counter-terrorism framework, senior IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following the premature repatriation of outgoing NIA DG Sadanand Vasant Date to his parent cadre, Maharashtra.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) confirmed that Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, will hold the top post at the NIA until August 31, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. His tenure will extend up to the date of his superannuation.

According to the official notification, the ACC approved the appointment of Shri Rakesh Aggarwal, IPS (HP:1994), currently serving as Special Director General (SDG), NIA, as Director General, National Investigation Agency, in the Level-16 of the Pay Matrix, with effect from the date he assumes charge.

A highly respected and experienced officer, Rakesh Aggarwal brings with him more than three decades of distinguished service in policing and national security. Over the course of his career, he has handled some of the most sensitive and complex cases related to terrorism, extremist activities, and organized crime, earning a reputation for professional integrity, strategic insight, and operational excellence.

During his tenure with the National Investigation Agency, Aggarwal has played a key role in strengthening the agency’s investigative framework, improving inter-agency coordination, and ensuring swift, evidence-based probes in cases with national and international ramifications. His leadership as Special Director General was instrumental in reinforcing institutional discipline, upgrading investigative capabilities, and enhancing the NIA’s overall effectiveness.

Known for his calm, decisive, and hands-on leadership style, Aggarwal places strong emphasis on rule of law, use of technology in investigations, and continuous professional development of officers. His appointment comes at a crucial time, as the NIA continues to confront evolving terror threats, radicalization networks, cyber-enabled conspiracies, and cross-border security challenges.

With Rakesh Aggarwal at the helm, the NIA is expected to further consolidate its position as India’s premier counter-terrorism investigation agency, reinforcing public confidence and ensuring a firm, professional response to threats against the nation’s security.
