New Delhi, January 1, 2026: Air India on Thursday confirmed that one of its pilots has been taken off flying duties after Canadian authorities raised concerns over his fitness to operate a Vancouver–Delhi flight last month, leading to a last-minute delay.
According to the airline, the incident occurred on December 23, 2025, when Flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi was preparing for departure. One of the cockpit crew members was deplaned shortly before take-off after Canadian authorities flagged issues related to the pilot’s fitness for duty.
In a statement, Air India said the pilot was subjected to further inquiry by local authorities following the intervention. As a precautionary measure and in line with safety protocols, the airline immediately grounded the pilot and removed him from active flying duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
To ensure passenger safety, an alternate pilot was arranged to operate the flight, which resulted in a delay. The airline expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers and said it is fully cooperating with Canadian authorities in the matter.
Air India added that any confirmed violation emerging from the inquiry would invite strict disciplinary action in accordance with company policy. The airline reiterated that passenger safety remains its highest priority and that all operational decisions are guided by established safety norms.
