Punjab Cabinet Calls Special Assembly Session on December 30 to Discuss Replacing MGNREGA

Chandigarh, December 20, 2025: The Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, on Saturday decided to convene a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on December 30 to deliberate on the proposed scrapping of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme and the introduction of the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), also known as VB-G RAM G.

The decision was taken amid growing political debate over the Centre’s move to replace the two-decade-old rural employment programme with the new scheme. The special session is expected to witness detailed discussions on the implications of discontinuing MGNREGA and the rollout of the alternative employment guarantee framework in the state.

Officials said the session will provide a platform for lawmakers to examine the impact of the proposed transition on rural employment, wage security, and the livelihood of workers across Punjab. The development comes as several opposition parties have raised concerns over the future of rural job security following the introduction of the VB-G RAM G scheme at the national level.
