Calgary ( Rajeev Sharma): A powerful winter storm and sudden blizzard conditions turned a stretch of Highway QE2 between Airdrie and Calgary into a scene of devastation, as a massive chain-reaction collision involving an estimated 80 to 100 vehicles left motorists fighting for their lives.
The intense snow blizzard brought near-zero visibility, fierce winds, and ice-covered pavement, creating extremely dangerous driving conditions. Many drivers reported being unable to see more than a few metres ahead before traffic abruptly came to a halt. Vehicles began sliding uncontrollably, crashing into one another in rapid succession, leaving people trapped inside crushed cars and trucks.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene amid the whiteout, working in life-threatening conditions to rescue stranded motorists, provide medical aid, and prevent further collisions. Alberta RCMP shut down large sections of QE2 as ambulances, fire crews, and tow operators battled the storm to reach those in distress.

Authorities confirmed that multiple people were injured, with several taken to hospital, though the full extent of injuries remains under investigation. Officials said the blizzard placed lives in serious danger, as exposure to extreme cold, delayed rescue times, and the scale of the wreckage created an urgent and critical situation.

Photos and videos from the highway show mangled vehicles, jackknifed semi-trucks, and debris scattered across multiple lanes, while snow continued to whip across the roadway. Some motorists were forced to wait for hours in freezing temperatures as crews worked to reach them safely.

Environment Canada had issued winter storm and blizzard warnings for the region, urging residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Police are once again reminding drivers that winter storms can turn deadly within minutes and are advising reduced speeds, increased following distances, and caution during severe weather.
Cleanup operations continued into the evening, and officials warned that highway closures and significant delays could persist as crews work to restore safe travel conditions. Further updates are expected as the situation develops
