Alberta Reaches New Deal for Frontline Health-Care Workers, Says Minister Horner

Alberta Health Care Workers Secure New Agreement, Says Minister Horner

Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s government says a new labour agreement has been finalized for thousands of frontline health-care staff, marking the end of several months of bargaining between Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).

In a statement released Friday, President of Treasury Board and Finance Minister Nate Horner confirmed that negotiators have reached a settlement covering Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Health Care Aides (HCAs) across the province.

Horner welcomed the development, calling it the result of sustained effort on both sides. “After months of negotiations, we appreciate the collective effort it has taken for AHS and AUPE to reach an agreement,” he said.

The new contract provides wage and benefit improvements for nearly 16,000 LPNs and HCAs—employees who form the backbone of day-to-day operations in hospitals, long-term care homes, and community facilities. According to the minister, the deal is expected to support workforce stability at a time when Alberta continues to face pressures throughout the health-care system.

Horner also expressed gratitude for the contributions of these workers, noting their daily commitment to patients across the province. “We thank these workers for their skill, dedication, and the difference they make every day in Alberta’s health care system,” he said.

Details of the agreement are expected to be shared by AHS and AUPE as the formal ratification process moves forward.
