South Africa Upsets India by 30 Runs in Kolkata Test as Spin Weaknesses Resurface

Kolkata, November 16, 2025: South Africa stunned India by 30 runs in the opening Test at Eden Gardens, exposing serious frailties in the Indian batting lineup against spin. The visitors chase of 124 proved too much, with India folding for 93 in 35 overs.

Simon Harmer emerged as the match-winner for South Africa, taking eight wickets in the game. Despite spin-friendly conditions expected to favour Indian bowlers Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, it was Harmer’s probing off-spin that made the real impact.

India was further weakened by the absence of Shubman Gill, who could not bat due to a neck injury. During the chase, Washington Sundar (31 off 92) and Jadeja (18 off 26) held their ground briefly, playing with composure, but Harmer broke India’s spine by dismissing Jadeja. Washington was then trapped by Aiden Markram’s part-time off-break.

Dhruv Jurel began confidently and survived an early review, but his poor shot selection later got him out. Stand-in captain Rishabh Pant, returning from injury, managed just 2 off 13 before Maharaj claimed his wicket.

Axar Patel briefly brought hope with a quick 26, including two sixes, but Maharaj dismissed him soon after, sealing the win for South Africa.

On the other side, Bavuma anchored the innings with a gutsy 55 not out, helping build a crucial partnership with Corbin Bosch (25 off 37). Marco Jansen played a major role early on, removing Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck and getting the big wicket of KL Rahul.

India’s bowling effort had bright spots: Jadeja took 4 for 50, while Kuldeep and Siraj took two each. Axar and Bumrah also chipped in, claiming one wicket apiece.

India’s defeat is its fourth at home in the last six Tests and renews deep questions about its ability to bat under turning conditions.
