Washington, November 11, 2025 — US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that negotiations for a landmark trade agreement between the United States and India are nearing completion. He suggested that both nations are close to finalising a fair and mutually beneficial deal that will include tariff reductions on Indian exports.
Addressing the media after the swearing-in ceremony of Sergio Gor as the new US Ambassador to India, Trump said, “We’re close to sealing a deal with India. It’s going to be a fair agreement—good for everyone involved.” He noted that past trade policies had created imbalances, but the upcoming deal would restore fairness and strengthen bilateral ties.
When questioned about tariffs on Indian goods, Trump stated that Washington plans to reduce them soon. “India had high tariffs mainly due to Russian oil imports. That has now changed. We’re planning to lower those tariffs gradually,” he said.
Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that trade discussions between the two countries are progressing steadily, though some complex issues are still being worked out. Both sides have expressed confidence that the agreement will significantly boost economic cooperation.
The India–US trade partnership aims to expand bilateral commerce to $500 billion by 2030, marking a key milestone in strengthening strategic and economic relations between the two democracies.
