India Women End 47-Year Wait, Capture First-Ever ODI World Cup Title

Navi Mumbai, November 2, 2025 — The Indian women’s cricket team made history on Sunday by lifting their maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup trophy after defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a gripping final at DY Patil Stadium. The triumph marked the end of a 47-year-long pursuit of the world title.

South Africa, who opted to bowl first, struggled to contain India’s aggressive batting display. Shafali Verma led the innings with an exceptional 87, while Deepti Sharma anchored the middle order with a solid 58. Smriti Mandhana’s fluent 45 and Richa Ghosh’s quickfire 34 added crucial runs as India posted a commanding total of 298 for seven wickets. Ayabonga Khaka stood out for South Africa, claiming three wickets but finding little support from her teammates.

In response, South Africa started strong, with captain Laura Wolvaardt notching her second consecutive century of the tournament. However, her dismissal triggered a collapse, and the side folded for 246 runs, falling short of the target.

Deepti Sharma emerged as the star with the ball as well, picking up five wickets in a match-winning spell. Shafali Verma, who had earlier shone with the bat, turned part-time bowler and grabbed two key wickets to derail South Africa’s chase.

As the final wicket fell, Indian players celebrated an emotional moment that will go down as one of the greatest achievements in women’s cricket. The victory not only brought home India’s first-ever ODI World Cup crown but also showcased the team’s depth, composure, and determination on the biggest stage.
