New Delhi / Kuala Lumpur (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the forthcoming 47th ASEAN Summit virtually, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed on Thursday. The high-profile gathering is scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur later this month.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Anwar Ibrahim revealed that he had a conversation with a senior official from Prime Minister Modi’s office to discuss ways to elevate Malaysia–India relations. The talks reportedly focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, education, and regional security.

“Last night, I received a phone call from a colleague of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explore avenues for strengthening Malaysia–India bilateral ties at a more strategic and comprehensive level,” Anwar posted.

He also acknowledged India’s vital role as one of Malaysia’s key partners in various sectors, particularly investment and economic collaboration.

During the exchange, both sides also discussed preparations for the 47th ASEAN Summit. Anwar mentioned that Prime Minister Modi will be joining the event through a virtual link, citing the concurrent Deepavali celebrations in India as the reason for his remote participation.

The Malaysian leader extended his best wishes to Prime Minister Modi and the Indian people on the occasion of the festival of lights.

Reaffirming Malaysia’s commitment to closer cooperation, Anwar emphasized his government’s intent to work alongside India and other ASEAN members in promoting regional peace, prosperity, and stability.

The 47th ASEAN Summit is expected to bring together leaders from across Southeast Asia and partner nations to deliberate on issues of economic integration, regional security, and sustainable development.
