National Times Bureau :- The number of Indians deported from Canada has risen sharply in recent years. In 2019, only 625 Indians were removed—less than one-third of the 2024 total, according to an earlier Hindustan Times report.
By July 28 this year, 1,891 Indian nationals had already been deported, as per data from the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). The rise comes amid an increasing wave of anti-immigration sentiment in Canada.
In a statement on October 10, the Peel Regional Police (PRP) announced for the first time that it was “working closely with the Peel Crown Attorney’s Office and the Canada Border Services Agency to determine whether deportation of accused foreign nationals could be pursued as part of the judicial process.”
Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this week responded to a media query during an event in Toronto on whether his government will focus on deporting foreign criminals.
The short answer is yes, he said, adding that there are plans to make it faster, with better resources and to improve the tracking.
“That’s part of a broader set of reforms that we are making to the immigration system here in Canada,” Carney said.
The question was related to asylum seekers, as well as those on temporary resident permits.
The statement referred to the arrest of eight men accused of stealing 450 pieces of mail, worth over CA$400,000. The suspects were identified as Sumanpreet Singh, Gurdeep Chattha, Jashandeep Jattana, Harman Singh, Jasanpreet Singh, Manroop Singh, Rajbir Singh, and Upinderjit Singh. They face a total of 344 charges.
Indians currently top the list of people facing deportation proceedings in Canada, with 6,837 cases, followed by 5,170 Mexicans and 1,734 Americans. Out of a total 30,733 cases under review, 27,103 are refugee claimants — and Indians make up the largest group among asylum seekers.
