Election Commission Announces Bye-Election Schedule for Tarn Taran Assembly Seat

Chandigarh, October 12, 2025: The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the bye-election to the 21-Tarn Taran Assembly Constituency in Punjab. Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, Sibin C said the nomination process will begin on October 13, 2025, with the issue of Gazette Notification.

The last date for filing nominations will be October 21, followed by scrutiny on October 22. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations until October 24. Polling is scheduled for November 11, and counting of votes will take place on November 14. The entire election process will conclude before November 16, 2025.

Polling will be conducted from 7 AM to 6 PM. Nomination papers can be submitted to the Returning Officer between 11 AM and 3 PM on any working day, except public holidays, from October 13 to 21. The nomination papers must be filled in Form 2B, available with the Returning Officer.

Sibin C informed that candidates must be registered electors of any constituency within Punjab and are required to produce a certified copy of their entry in the electoral roll. Each candidate must also make and subscribe to an oath or affirmation before the Returning Officer or an officer authorized by the Election Commission of India after filing their nomination and before the scrutiny date.

The Chief Electoral Officer clarified that October 18 (Saturday) will not be treated as a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, and nomination papers can be filed that day. However, October 19 (Sunday) and October 20 (Monday, Diwali) are holidays under the same Act, so nominations cannot be filed on those dates.

Sibin C added that the Model Code of Conduct came into effect on October 6, 2025, following the bye-election announcement, and will remain in force until the completion of the entire election process.
