New Delhi, October 11, 2025: India and Canada are set to explore a new framework for “strategic cooperation” covering trade, energy, and security during Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to New Delhi beginning Sunday.
Anand will hold extensive discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal aimed at boosting bilateral relations across key sectors. India will be her first stop in a three-nation tour that also includes Singapore and China.
According to a Canadian government readout, both countries are working toward a “strategic framework” focusing on trade diversification, energy transformation, and security collaboration. During her stay, Anand will also visit Mumbai to engage with Indian and Canadian firms involved in investment, job creation, and economic opportunities.
Her visit follows the recent trip of Canada’s National Security Advisor Nathalie Drouin to India, where she held extensive talks with Indian NSA Ajit Doval. Shortly after that meeting, Canada designated the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization for “violently targeting” certain communities and fostering fear and intimidation.
Diplomatic ties between India and Canada have been improving since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in June. The two leaders agreed to revive bilateral cooperation after years of strained relations.
The relationship had plunged in 2023 when then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar — a charge India dismissed as “absurd.” The fallout led to the withdrawal of diplomats on both sides and a deep freeze in communication.
However, following Mark Carney’s victory in the April 2025 elections, both nations restored their high commissioners and reopened dialogue mechanisms to advance cooperation in multiple sectors.
After India, Anand will travel to Singapore to meet her counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan and further strengthen Canada’s engagement with Southeast Asia. In China, she will meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi to mark 55 years of diplomatic ties and continue discussions on the Canada-China Strategic Partnership and global economic issues.
