Amritsar (Punjab), October 10, 2025: Fortis Escorts Hospital, Amritsar, has issued an official statement following the sudden death of celebrated bodybuilder and actor Varinder Singh Ghuman, who passed away during a shoulder surgery on Thursday.
According to the hospital, Ghuman visited the OPD on October 6, 2025, complaining of pain and restricted movement in his right shoulder. After clinical evaluation, doctors recommended arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with biceps tenodesis. The hospital confirmed that Ghuman had no known comorbidities prior to the procedure.
The surgery began under general anaesthesia on October 9, 2025, and was reportedly completed around 3 PM without complications. However, at approximately 3:35 PM, Ghuman developed a sudden cardiac arrhythmia. Despite immediate intervention and prolonged resuscitation efforts by anaesthesia, cardiology, and critical care teams, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 5:36 PM.
“Fortis Hospital deeply regrets this unfortunate loss and extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and his numerous fans,” the hospital statement read.
The untimely death of the 42-year-old athlete has shocked the Indian bodybuilding fraternity and fans across Punjab. Ghuman’s family has sought clarity regarding the circumstances of the surgery, prompting calls for a detailed investigation.
A Legacy in Bodybuilding and Cinema
Varinder Singh Ghuman earned global recognition as one of India’s top bodybuilders. He won Mr. India (2009) and secured second place in Mr. Asia, representing India internationally.
Ghuman also made his mark in cinema, debuting in Punjabi films with Kabaddi Once More (2012) and later appearing in Bollywood movies such as Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans (2014) and Marjaavaan (2019).
Known as Punjab’s ‘Ironman’, Ghuman was celebrated for his discipline, humility, and dedication to promoting fitness among youth. His last rites were performed at the Model Town crematorium in Jalandhar, attended by family, friends, and a large gathering of fans.
