Surrey Police Arrest Shooting Suspect Near Gateway SkyTrain Station

Surrey (Rajeev Sharma): According to information released by Surrey Police Services, one man has been taken into custody following a mid-afternoon shooting incident in Surrey’s Whalley neighbourhood on Monday, which prompted a swift and coordinated police response.

At approximately 3:13 p.m., Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers in the vicinity reported that a man had opened fire near Gateway SkyTrain Station at University Drive and 108 Avenue. Fortunately, no officers or members of the public were injured in the incident.

The suspect fled the scene but was soon located in front of SPS’s District 1 Community Police Office, where additional shots were reportedly fired.

Specialized units, including the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT) and the Integrated Police Dog Service (IPDS), were deployed to assist. Officers safely apprehended the suspect without further incident.

The RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was later deployed to inspect a suspicious bag left behind by the suspect at the District 1 office. The bag was examined and determined not to contain any hazardous materials.

The area remains an active investigation site as officers collect physical and digital evidence. Police have cautioned that portions of Gateway SkyTrain Station, 108 Avenue, King George Boulevard, and 107A Avenue may remain closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic through the evening.

Authorities are urging anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage from between 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., to contact the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 (file number 25-87819 (SP)) or to reach out anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
