New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and one of the most prominent faces of the party’s early days in the capital, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, breathed his last on Tuesday morning at his residence in Delhi. He was 94.
The Delhi BJP unit, confirming the news, paid heartfelt tributes to the veteran politician, acknowledging his pivotal role in laying the foundation of the party in the national capital.
Pioneering Figure in Delhi’s BJP Journey
Malhotra was a key architect of the BJP’s early structure in Delhi, holding the distinction of being the first-ever president of the Delhi BJP. Under his stewardship, the party built its base during a time of significant political change in the country.
Known for his calm demeanour and long-standing public service, Malhotra also represented the BJP in various administrative and legislative roles during his career spanning several decades.
Symbolic Timing of His Passing
In a coincidental twist of fate, Malhotra’s death came just a day after the Delhi BJP inaugurated its first permanent state office at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, a milestone that reflects how far the party has come since its formative days — many of which were shaped under Malhotra’s leadership.
The new office was inaugurated on Monday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had also acknowledged the contributions of senior leaders in his address.
Tributes from Across the Political Spectrum
Tributes have poured in from BJP leaders, supporters, and colleagues, many of whom remembered Malhotra as a mentor and guiding light for several generations of political workers in Delhi.
“He was a leader of great experience and wisdom, who served Delhi and the nation with integrity and commitment,” said one senior BJP office-bearer.
Several leaders are expected to attend his funeral, with arrangements currently being handled by his family.
A Life Dedicated to Public Service
Vijay Kumar Malhotra’s political journey, which began well before the formation of the BJP, was marked by his deep involvement in public affairs, party building, and governance. Over the years, he earned a reputation as a clean and respected figure, steering clear of controversies and remaining dedicated to ideological and organisational responsibilities.
